Cinco De Mayo is often confused with Mexican Independence Day. Cinco De Mayo is celebrated across Mexico because It was the day that they defeated French troops in the Battle of Puebla. The difference between Mexican Independence Day and Cinco De Mayo is that Mexican independence day marks the day that Miguel Hidalgo declared war against the Spanish colonial government. My family doesn't really celebrate but I don't know why. Cinco De Mayo is celebrated in the U.S. because Chicano activists raised awareness for the holiday in the 1960's.
